The Water Crisis Threatening Health and Education in Acholi

Long before the sun rises over the rolling hills of Pajule Sub-county in Northern Uganda, daily struggles for survival begin. Nineteen-year-old Brenda Lakot starts her day at 3:00 am, walking two kilometres into a dark valley carrying a 20-litre yellow jerrycan. Her destination is not a functioning borehole or protected spring, but a shallow, stagnant stream shared by local villagers and domestic livestock.

The water Lakot draws is murky brown, filled with insect larvae, and carries a strong, unpleasant odor. Yet for Lakot and the more than 600 residents of Palenga Aywee Village in Pader District, this contaminated pool has remained their primary water source for nearly two decades.

This ongoing crisis highlights a grim reality across the Acholi sub-region. Nearly twenty years after populations left post-conflict Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps, basic infrastructure like clean water remains severely lacking. Broken boreholes are left unrepaired, forcing communities to make dangerous choices that directly undermine local healthcare and education standards.

When children and adults consume unsafe water, waterborne illnesses surge, overwhelming underfunded health facilities and causing high absenteeism in local schools. Families spend precious hours collecting water instead of focusing on education and economic development.

Local leaders and communities continue to call for urgent government intervention to rehabilitate non-functional water sources and install new infrastructure. Without reliable access to clean water, the region’s recovery and development goals remain severely compromised.
