The German government has pledged €50 million, approximately Shs210 billion, in fresh grants to support various development projects across Uganda over the next two years. The announcement followed two days of intensive Government-to-Government negotiations held in Kampala.
Out of the total funding, €35 million has been dedicated to water and electricity projects, while €10 million will target agribusiness and local economic development. Additionally, €5 million is earmarked to support refugee participation and the communities hosting them. The financial package consists of €30 million in Financial Cooperation and €20 million in Technical Cooperation.
State Minister for Finance Henry Musasizi noted that the funding aligns with Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV) and the Tenfold Growth Strategy, which aims to drive the economy toward a $500 billion target by 2040. He highlighted that €18 million of the energy allocation will specifically boost electrification in the West Nile region, enhancing trade with the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
Joachim Schmitt, head of the German delegation, stated that the enduring partnership aims to assist Uganda in graduating from Least Developed Country status. German Ambassador to Uganda Sigrid Sommer underscored that the new agreement builds upon more than six decades of fruitful bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of expanding trade and private sector investment.
