King Charles has described the transatlantic slave trade as a “shameful chapter of history” that fills him with “profound sorrow.” Speaking during the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in Antigua and Barbuda, the monarch noted that the trade in enslaved persons continues to cast a shadow over the association of nations.

While anticipatory calls had been made for the UK to issue a formal apology for its historic role in the trade, the King’s address did not include one. However, he offered significant contrition and acknowledged that he has personally learned more about the legacy of slavery through listening and engaging with the issues.

“The transatlantic trade in enslaved persons still casts a shadow over these islands and other members of our Commonwealth,” King Charles told the summit of leaders from the 56-member voluntary grouping. He emphasized a commitment to finding ways to work in modern partnership to address past wrongs with future action.

The royal address also touched upon broader global challenges, including brutal conflicts, the catastrophic reality of climate change, and rapid technological development. The biennial meeting, held under the theme of accelerating partnerships and investment, coincides with a royal tour of the Caribbean that has reignited discussions surrounding the UK’s colonial legacy.
