The National Peasants Party (NPP) is grappling with deep internal divisions following the suspension of its former Secretary General, Shariff Nambale Sentongo. A faction led by Robert Kasibante, who carried the party’s presidential flag in recent elections, announced the suspension citing alleged misconduct, failure to account for campaign funds, and collaboration with rival political organizations.
Addressing the press at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Ndeeba, Elias Wamala, Chairman of the National Consultative Council, introduced an interim leadership committee headed by Kasibante. Under the new arrangement, Bruce Muhangi takes over as interim Secretary General, while Thomas Bagonza assumes the role of party spokesperson. The faction urged the public to cease dealings with Nambale and announced upcoming nationwide mobilization campaigns focused on advocacy and legal support.
However, Nambale has vehemently rejected his suspension, dismissing the opposing faction as hypocrites driven by personal gain. As a founding member, Nambale argued that the group lacks the constitutional authority to remove him and counter-accused Kasibante of attempting to sell off the party. He also contested Kasibante’s claim to the party presidency, clarifying that Kasibante was merely chosen as a presidential flagbearer rather than an executive leader.
With both sides claiming legitimacy, the party remains deadlocked. A future national delegates’ conference is expected to finally resolve the leadership crisis and elect a substantive executive committee.
