The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has initiated a €145 million, approximately Shs600 billion, water and sanitation project designed to serve over one million residents in fast-growing areas spanning Wakiso, Mpigi, Kampala, and Entebbe.
Known as the Wakiso West Water and Sanitation Project, this major infrastructural development is backed by Impact Fund Denmark through the Ugandan government. It features the construction of a substantial water treatment plant at Bwerenga along Lake Victoria, capable of processing 62,500 cubic metres of water daily.
NWSC Managing Director Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha emphasized that the investment is a crucial response to rapid urbanization and escalating service demands west of Kampala. The comprehensive plan includes raw water intakes, extensive transmission networks, five service reservoirs with a storage capacity exceeding 15,250 cubic metres, and multiple pumping stations.
To ensure marginalized populations benefit, the project targets about 160,000 residents in informal settlements by establishing 941 Community Water Dispensers across various neighborhoods. Additionally, environmental and public health concerns will be tackled through a new decentralized faecal sludge treatment plant in Kajjansi, processing 400 cubic metres daily to prevent water source contamination.
Recently, NWSC signed a consultancy contract worth €9.48 million and Shs2.15 billion with a joint venture comprising NIRAS A/S and Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG, alongside local sub-consultants. The initiative will unfold in phases, beginning with detailed engineering designs followed by 30 months of construction.
