Parliament has intervened in the growing concerns regarding personal liberties and security operations across the country. Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth has directed the Minister of Internal Affairs, Professor Ephraim Kamuntu, to deliver a detailed statement addressing recent reports of arrests and alleged abductions.
The directive came after Opposition Chief Whip Paul Mwiru brought the matter before the house as an issue of national importance. Mwiru expressed deep concern over security agencies allegedly violating citizens’ rights through arbitrary arrests and prolonged detentions without trial.
According to the Opposition Chief Whip, several individuals, including retired military generals, have been taken into custody and held in unidentified locations. These actions have left distressed families completely unaware of their loved ones’ whereabouts or well-being.
“People are being arrested, including retired army generals, and they are being detained in ungazetted facilities without trial,” Mwiru stated to Parliament, demanding transparency regarding who is orchestrating these operations and where the detainees are currently located.
Responding to the directive, Minister Kamuntu assured the legislature that the government has prepared an official response and is ready to provide clarity on the matter.
“The report is ready. On Wednesday, I will come and present a comprehensive statement on the matter raised by the Opposition Chief Whip,” Kamuntu confirmed.
