Uganda is reaching out to international partners to breathe new life into its historical cotton industry. During a high-level parliamentary meeting, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa expressed the country’s strong interest in attracting Greek investment to upgrade cotton production, adopt high-yielding seed varieties, and boost local value addition.

The discussions took place at Parliament, where Tayebwa met with Uganda’s Honorary Consul to Greece, Vasiliki Alexandraki. The consul was accompanied by Greek investor Petros Gialamas alongside delegates from the Mbale-based Afric Cooperative Society Ltd, an organisation playing a key role in reviving cotton farming across the region.

Highlighting the nation’s agricultural goals, Tayebwa emphasized that accessing superior seed variants and processing raw materials locally are crucial steps to maximize returns for farmers and stakeholders. While specific financial terms remain under wraps, Gialamas is actively assessing viable investment prospects within the domestic textile supply chain.

Beyond agriculture, the engagement also touched on cultural and economic diplomacy. Consul Alexandraki updated officials on her ongoing initiatives to market Uganda’s vibrant tourism sector abroad. She highlighted a promotional documentary produced by visiting Greek journalists, which successfully captured millions of viewers across Europe.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa lauded these bilateral efforts, acknowledging the Consul’s dedication to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties. The meeting included key figures such as Senior Presidential Advisor on Tourism Lilly Ajarova, Oyam North MP Dr. Eunice Otuko Apio, and Bulambuli District Woman MP Sarah Nambozo Wekomba.
