Renowned Ugandan international leader Winnie Byanyima has been appointed as the new chair of the board of trustees for the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Operating as a prominent research and policy organization dedicated to sustainable development, IIED announced that Byanyima is slated to take over the role from outgoing chair Paul George when his term officially concludes in January 2027.

Byanyima currently serves as the executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) alongside her role as a UN Under-Secretary-General. Her appointment arrives at a critical juncture as the sustainable development sector navigates mounting obstacles, including severe pressures on international multilateral cooperation and shifting global priorities.

Highlighting her extensive background, IIED noted that Byanyima brings decades of expertise in social justice, equality, and sustainable advancement. Before stepping onto the global stage, she spent 11 years in Uganda’s Parliament, where she established the nation’s first parliamentary caucus for women MPs and successfully championed gender equality provisions within the 1995 Ugandan Constitution.

Her distinguished international career features senior leadership roles with Oxfam International, the United Nations Development Programme, and the African Union Commission. Additionally, she has co-chaired the World Economic Forum and provided advisory support to G7 and G20 presidencies on critical issues concerning gender equity and wealth disparities.

Expressing gratitude for the new role, Byanyima emphasized the importance of community partnerships in overcoming current challenges. IIED Executive Director Tom Mitchell and outgoing chair Paul George both welcomed the appointment, praising her lifelong dedication to fairness and her capability to foster crucial global alliances.
