In a remarkable display of resilience, a 16-year-old Primary Seven candidate from Kyambura Primary School in Rubirizi District successfully welcomed a baby girl and sat her national Primary Leaving Examinations on the very same day.
According to reports from the Daily Monitor, the young candidate went into labor the night before and delivered her baby at approximately 2:00 am at Kichwamba Health Centre III. She was accompanied to the medical facility by her 82-year-old grandmother.
Despite the physical toll of childbirth, the determined student refused to let the milestone deter her educational future. Just hours after the delivery, she returned to her school to tackle her Mathematics and Social Studies papers. While she was in the examination room, her newborn baby was looked after by her grandmother alongside local health workers.
Stella Nakacwa, the in-charge at Kichwamba Health Centre III, noted that the event underscores the importance of community support for young expectant mothers. School authorities, including deputy headteacher Jeric Namulega, helped ensure the candidate smoothly transitioned from the health facility to her examination center.
This inspiring case highlights ongoing efforts by educators and health workers in Uganda to support young mothers under national guidelines that encourage teenage parents to remain in school and complete their basic education.
