Democrat Roy Cooper has secured a major victory by winning a key Senate race in North Carolina, flipping a seat previously held by Republican Thom Tillis. According to projections, Cooper defeated his Republican opponent, Michael Whatley, who previously served as the chairman of the Republican National Committee.
This marks the first time North Carolina has elected a Democratic senator since 2008. The win serves as a significant milestone for Democrats aiming to capture control of Congress from Republicans in the midterm elections.
Addressing supporters in Raleigh, Cooper emphasized economic issues that formed the core of his campaign. He pointed out that many middle-class families in the state have struggled while wealthy Americans accumulated immense wealth.
“As your new United States Senator, I am ready to take that message to Washington and work to do something about it,” Cooper told the cheering crowd.
Cooper, 69, brings extensive political experience to Washington, having served as North Carolina’s governor from 2017 to 2025 alongside a previous tenure as the state’s attorney general. His campaign centered heavily on making life more affordable by lowering the costs of groceries, healthcare, energy, utilities, childcare, and housing.
His opponent, Whatley, was heavily endorsed by President Donald Trump and campaigned on enacting the president’s agenda, curbing illegal immigration, and rolling back Democratic initiatives. The seat became open after outgoing Senator Thom Tillis opted against seeking a third term following political fallout with President Trump.
