The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has renewed its call for active public participation in the ongoing fight against corruption, emphasizing that collective responsibility is essential to achieving transparency and accountability across Uganda.
Speaking on the initiative, Christine Lamwaka, the Inspectorate’s Assistant Director of Advocacy, explained that institutional reach has natural limits. Because government bodies cannot be everywhere at once, engaging diverse stakeholders helps extend oversight directly into grassroots communities.
According to Lamwaka, Article 17 of the Constitution underpins this collective responsibility. The Inspectorate is actively collaborating with civil society organizations, the media, and public servants to leverage their unique platforms and mobilize citizens against malpractices.
Public institutions have been urged to embrace openness by making critical information accessible. Sharing details regarding government budgets, recruitment exercises, and procurement processes helps eliminate the suspicions that often arise when information is kept hidden from taxpayers.
Furthermore, the IG stresses the importance of involving citizens in setting local development priorities. When communities help select and monitor public projects, they develop a sense of ownership, making them more likely to protect the services delivered to them.
Ultimately, empowering ordinary citizens equips them to recognize, reject, and report corrupt practices. By educating the public on available reporting channels, the Inspectorate hopes to foster a culture of integrity that complements formal institutional oversight.
