In an effort to curb the rising toll of road carnage, National Resistance Movement Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko has joined forces with the Traffic Police and transport operators to launch a festive season road safety campaign. The initiative was unveiled at Wobulenzi Taxi Park in Luwero District, targeting the accident-prone Kampala-Gulu Highway following a series of devastating crashes that have claimed numerous lives.
The campaign brings together the Rose Namayanja Foundation, Traffic Police, the Uganda Taxi Operators Federation (UTOF), and local leaders to foster behavioural change among motorists. Speaking at the launch, Ms Namayanja noted that over 24,000 Ugandans had lost their lives in road crashes over the past five years. Drawing from her personal experience as a survivor of a severe road crash who underwent five major surgeries, she urged motorists to exercise personal responsibility rather than obeying traffic laws merely to evade police arrests.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura commended the partnership, noting that approximately 95 percent of road accidents stem from human error and poor behavioral choices. He cautioned drivers against speeding, dangerous overtaking, and driving while fatigued, which he termed a silent killer. Transport sector leaders, including UTOF chairman Rashid Sekindi, pledged closer monitoring of drivers to ensure accountability and passenger safety as traffic volumes swell.
According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report, road fatalities rose to 5,383 in 2025, averaging about 15 deaths daily. Authorities hope that continuous community sensitization, stricter enforcement, and proactive driver education will significantly reduce casualties during the busy holiday period and beyond.
