Residents and local leaders in the North Bukedi region are celebrating the official opening of a new High Court circuit in Pallisa District. The facility aims to decentralize judicial services and eliminate the heavy logistical and financial burdens previously faced by litigants.

Previously, communities in Budaka, Butebo, Kibuku, and Pallisa relied on the Mbale High Court circuit. The new establishment is expected to significantly reduce travel distances, ease pressure on existing courts, and help tackle persistent case backlogs.

Presiding over the opening ceremony on November 2, 2026, Justice Lawrence Tweyenza announced that the court has commenced operations with a docket of criminal cases. The initial caseload features serious offenses, including aggravated robbery, murder, defilement, and rape.

Justice Tweyenza urged accused persons to embrace plea bargaining. He noted that the arrangement helps save time and resources associated with full trials while potentially resulting in lighter sentences.

Local leaders warmly welcomed the development. Pallisa District LC5 Chairperson Ben Okiria praised the Judiciary for bringing hope and timely justice to the grassroots. Meanwhile, Deputy Resident District Commissioner Aisha Nakusi emphasized that the court will particularly benefit vulnerable communities with limited financial resources.
