Residents of Kyengera recently received much-needed healthcare support during a free medical camp organized by the Rotary Club of Kampala Central at Mother of Mercy Hospital. A total of 321 patients turned up to receive medical attention from a diverse team of specialists, including dentists, gynaecologists, opticians, and general practitioners.
While the organizers initially hoped to reach 400 people, the turnout was still hailed as a massive success. Out of those examined, 192 patients received free prescriptions from the hospital pharmacy. Many attendees noted that they had suffered from illnesses for a long time without seeking medical help because they could not afford the cost of drugs.
Sister Maria Namuwulya, head of Mother of Mercy Hospital, noted that subsequent feedback from patients confirmed the event’s profound impact. Many beneficiaries who previously lacked the financial means to buy medicine are now on the path to recovery.
The initiative highlights the heavy financial burden of public healthcare in Uganda, where ordinary citizens often struggle to afford basic treatments like malaria management amidst a rising cost of living.
Duncan Aturinda, president of the Rotary Club of Kampala Central, emphasized that the club remains committed to public health because national economic growth relies on a healthy population. Beyond healthcare, the club continues to mobilize resources for environmental conservation efforts targeting Lake Victoria, the River Nile, and local forests.
