As Uganda’s agricultural sector continues to expand, livestock farming is experiencing remarkable growth. Recent figures show that the country’s pig herd has more than doubled in just over a decade, while the national cattle herd maintains a steady upward trajectory.
While this boom signifies economic progress for local farmers and the broader livestock industry, it also generates substantial quantities of animal waste. Traditionally, large piles of manure can pose environmental and health challenges if left unmanaged. However, progressive agricultural experts view these growing manure heaps as a valuable resource rather than mere waste.
By adopting modern waste management techniques such as composting and biodigesters, farmers can convert livestock manure into high-nutrient organic fertilizer. This processed compost plays a crucial role in feeding depleted soils, improving crop yields, and reducing reliance on expensive synthetic fertilizers.
Beyond soil enrichment, animal waste holds immense potential for renewable energy generation. Through anaerobic digestion, farmers can harness biogas from manure heaps to power homes for cooking and lighting. This dual benefit not only lowers household energy costs but also promotes sustainable farming practices across rural communities.
