The Court of Appeal has intervened in an ongoing family dispute by placing a temporary halt on all activities concerning a contested piece of land in Wakiso District. The property previously belonged to the late Eng. John Tebyasa Matovu, a Democratic Party stalwart and former Masaka Municipality Mayor who passed away at the age of 83 after battling health complications.
According to Daily Monitor, the prohibitive order will remain in effect until the determination of an appeal filed by Dr. Joseph Wasswa Matovu, a former Makerere University don and son of the late engineer. Dr. Matovu is locked in a legal battle with his stepmother, Ms. Adrona Nyindombi, and five others regarding the management and ownership of the estate.
The roots of the conflict stretch back to 2013 when Eng. Tebyasa was legally declared a person of unsound mind under the Mental Treatment Act following a severe battle with dementia. At that time, Dr. Matovu was appointed manager of his father’s estate. Following the engineer’s death, tensions escalated into a bitter succession and property dispute involving the widow and other family members.
Legal battles surrounding the estate have also touched on administrative concerns, including petitions regarding missing caveats at the Wakiso land registry. The court’s latest ruling aims to preserve the status quo of the contested property while the higher court reviews the substantive appeal.
