Susan Kushaba, the former chairperson of St Balikuddembe (Owino) Market, has been remanded to prison following her appearance at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court. The 46-year-old businesswoman and former Kampala Central parliamentary aspirant faced Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa, where she officially denied three counts of sending a false distress signal under the Uganda Communications Act.

According to the prosecution, Kushaba utilized the popular social media platform TikTok to publish controversial videos targeting high-ranking government officials. In the first count, she is accused of releasing a video accusing the Minister for Kampala, Minsa Kabanda Nabbengo, of engaging in land grabbing and fraudulent activities.

A second count states that Kushaba used the platform to level accusations against the State Minister for Kampala, Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye. The prosecution alleges she claimed the minister embezzled funds specifically intended to support Kampala’s boda boda riders and taxi operators. Furthermore, the third count involves allegations made against Muzamir Milundi Katumba concerning land belonging to Kamyokya KCCA Primary School.

After entering a plea of not guilty to all charges, Kushaba was remanded as legal proceedings continue. The case highlights ongoing scrutiny regarding the regulation of social media content and digital communications in Uganda, particularly concerning allegations directed at public figures.
