In a strategic move to strengthen Uganda’s position in the global coffee market, the government has partnered with three prominent private companies to upgrade local roasting standards. The collaborative initiative brings together the Ministry of Agriculture, Nonda Coffee, Littlefarms, and another key industry player to ensure that Ugandan coffee meets the highest international quality benchmarks before export.
Industry experts note that while Uganda is among Africa’s top coffee producers, a significant portion of beans has traditionally been exported in raw form. By enhancing domestic processing and roasting capabilities, stakeholders hope to retain more value within the country, boost farmer incomes, and build a stronger reputation for Ugandan specialty coffee worldwide.
The partnership will focus on technical training, modernizing processing equipment, and enforcing stringent quality control measures across participating facilities. Officials believe these steps are essential for meeting the growing demand for premium African coffee in both regional and international markets.
As the implementation phase rolls out, participating firms are expected to lead by example, adopting advanced technologies and sustainable practices that can be replicated across the broader domestic industry. This collaborative framework marks a critical milestone in transforming Uganda from a mere exporter of raw materials into a powerhouse of finished coffee products.
