Israeli President Isaac Herzog has initiated consultations with various political parties to determine who will be tasked with forming a new coalition government. This move follows the official delivery of general election results, which revealed no clear winner after the October 27 vote.
Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc nor his centrist rival Gadi Eisenkot secured a parliamentary majority. Netanyahu’s Likud party and its allies captured 53 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, while Eisenkot’s bloc secured 48 seats. Meanwhile, two Arab-led alliances achieved an unprecedented 19 seats, driven by a surge in voter turnout. Although these groups emerged as potential kingmakers, most Jewish parties previously pledged not to partner with them.
Receiving the certified results from Central Elections Committee chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg, President Herzog urged political factions to compromise. He noted that avoiding another costly election cycle requires leaders to realize that not every campaign promise can be fulfilled in the current political landscape. While the presidency is largely ceremonial, the officeholder holds the discretion to select a Knesset member to build a government, granting them 28 days with a possible 14-day extension.
The political climate remains tense as the Shin Bet security service investigates allegations of foreign interference. Election officials rejected unsubstantiated claims by Netanyahu’s camp of election tampering by Arab-led parties, maintaining that certification should proceed. Herzog condemned racist expressions directed at Arab Israelis during the fallout, emphasizing that communities must not be unfairly targeted.
