Leaders and residents in greater Luweero have broken away from the common practice of only praising public figures during funerals by organizing a grand thanksgiving service for veteran politician Hajji Abdul Nadduli. The event is scheduled for December 3, 2026, coinciding with Nadduli’s 84th birthday, and is expected to be graced by President Yoweri Museveni as the chief guest.

Organizers emphasized that honoring elder statesmen while they are alive carries profound meaning, especially given Nadduli’s current fragile health. Mr. David Kizito, a member of the organizing committee, noted that Nadduli happily welcomed the initiative when consulted about the celebration of his lifetime contributions to nation-building.

Nadduli, a prominent bush war veteran of the early 1980s National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation struggle, is widely celebrated in the region as an honest leader who resisted the temptation to amass wealth through corruption. During his tenure as Luweero District LC5 Chairperson and later as Minister Without Portfolio, his home served as a sanctuary for residents battling illegal land evictions. Local beneficiaries have frequently praised him for intervening in land disputes without demanding bribes, utilizing his official capacity to protect vulnerable citizens.

Beyond grassroots advocacy, Nadduli is remembered for championing key social infrastructure projects, such as constructing a 200-bed ward at Luweero Health Centre IV using local district revenue. Ambassador James Kinobe, an NRM Secretariat commissioner, commended the initiative and praised Nadduli for his unyielding courage and willingness to speak truth to power throughout his career.

Now 84 and spending most of his time at his Wobulenzi residence due to age and health challenges, Nadduli continues to advocate for democratic inclusion, respect for the 1995 Constitution, and an end to corruption-driven land injustices. He is also seeking financial support to publish his original historical manuscript detailing Uganda’s journey.
