President Yoweri Museveni has assured Teso and Kumam cultural leaders that retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu is safe and will not be harmed following his recent arrest. The high-level assurance was given during a private 45-minute meeting at State House Entebbe, which followed the conclusion of the Cultural Leaders Conference.
The delegation, led by Teso’s Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot, Teso queen Juliet Akaliait Among, and Kumam Paramount Chief Raphael Ateker Otaya, sought the President’s intervention to ease growing tension among local communities. Emorimor told the President that the arrest was creating community unease and distracting the population from regional development priorities. The cultural leaders also highlighted Elwelu’s long-standing loyalty to the ruling National Resistance Movement and his contributions to national security.
“Your Excellency, if there is any misunderstanding between your two sons, Gen. Muhoozi and Peter Elwelu, we urge you to sit them down for a dialogue for the sake of peace,” Emorimor appealed to the President during the closed-door discussions.
Echoing similar sentiments, Queen Mother Juliet Akaliait made an emotional plea as a mother representing affected families, asking the President to exercise a parental heart and forgive the retired general. Paramount Chief Raphael Otaya also requested that traditional elders be allowed to counsel Elwelu using customary leadership frameworks.
In his response, President Museveni urged the Ateker community to remain calm and allow security agencies to finish their ongoing investigations. He confirmed that he has instructed security organs to handle the case expeditiously before he steps in directly. Museveni reassured the delegation of the former deputy army chief’s safety and promised to engage him personally once probes conclude. Read the original report on Nile Post.
