NextCom Communications, a digital communications agency operating under Next Media, recently partnered with the Uganda Advertising Association (UAA) to host the Young Silverback Competition. Held at the Next Media Park, the event gathered upcoming creatives from student, corporate, and agency backgrounds to test their skills against rigorous industry standards.
Organised in conjunction with Loeries Africa Middle East, the competition is designed specifically for individuals aged 30 and below. It offers a vital platform for rising talent to build expertise in public relations, digital communications, marketing, and advertising. Working in pairs, participants tackled pressing creative challenges across seven diverse categories, including Film, Design, Media, Print, and Marketers, before presenting their solutions to a panel of seasoned industry leaders.
The judging panel featured prominent figures such as Adonia Waibale, Creative Director at Fireworks Advertising and Jury President; Lorraine Tukahirwa from Vision Group; Ibrahim of The Partnership Africa; Nassaka Joweria Leah representing NextCom; and digital creator Moses Kiboneka. Their evaluations ensured that competitors received valuable feedback from established players.
Speaking ahead of the main events, NextCom Brand Manager Nassaka Joweria Leah underscored the deeper value of effective communication. She noted that true creativity extends far beyond visual aesthetics, serving as a powerful tool to shape perceptions, influence feelings, drive meaningful impact, and ultimately alter consumer behavior in a digital-first world.
This initiative aligns closely with NextCom’s broader commitment to youth development, including the Next Creata Programme executed alongside partners like the Mastercard Foundation and Bayimba Cultural Foundation. By fostering practical skills in graphic design, video production, and social media management, these programs create sustainable pathways for young people entering Uganda’s vibrant creative economy.
The competition formed a key highlight of a three-day celebration themed “The Bold Rise.” Festivities continue with the Uganda Festival of Creativity and Expo at Next Media Park, culminating in the prestigious Silverback Awards Gala Dinner at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
