Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth has made a firm commitment to champion the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers in Uganda. The pledge was made on Thursday, 05 November 2026, during a courtesy call from members of the Uganda Judicial Officers’ Association (UJOA), who were led by Principal Judge Justice Jane Frances Abodo.
Addressing the delegation, Speaker Oboth emphasized that institutional performance heavily relies on adequate facilitation and proper working conditions. He invited the association to present their well-packaged proposals to the legislature, assuring them of Parliament’s full attention and backing.
Principal Judge Abodo highlighted the pressing need to uplift lower-bench officers, especially magistrates who form the backbone of UJOA’s membership. She noted that magistrates serve as the primary contact point for citizens entering the justice system, meaning their working environment directly dictates the quality of justice delivered to the public.
UJOA President Justice Daphne Ayebare appealed for legislative support concerning enhanced salaries, medical care, housing, and security for members. She also outlined the association’s broader mission, which includes judicial independence, legal research, and institutional reforms. Additionally, Ayebare shared details about the association’s humanitarian ‘Porridge Project’, which provides meals to vulnerable remandees attending court sessions at select locations.
