A wave of grief and shock has gripped residents of Keicumu II Cell in Engari Sub-county, Kazo District, following a violent late-night assault that left a young girl dead and her mother fighting for her life.
The victim has been identified as 10-year-old Shallona Ahimbisibwe, a Primary Two pupil at Keicumu Maranatha Primary School. Her 28-year-old mother, Juliet Kyomugisha, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving intensive medical care in critical condition at Kagongo Hospital in neighbouring Ibanda District.
According to preliminary reports from local authorities, the horrific incident unfolded around 11 PM. The primary suspect, Alon Kamukama, who is Kyomugisha’s husband, allegedly approached several neighbours to inform them that a dead body was inside his house, though he initially refused to reveal the identity of the deceased.
Alarmed by the revelation, local residents led by the area LC I chairperson rushed to the homestead. Upon entry, they discovered young Shallona lifeless on a bed alongside her severely wounded mother, who was covered in blood. Quick-acting residents managed to rescue Kyomugisha and transport her to the hospital before notifying the police.
A multidisciplinary security team comprising homicide detectives, Scenes of Crime Officers, and canine units promptly responded to process the scene. Using a deployed sniffer dog, authorities tracked a scent trail to a local clinic where Kamukama was receiving treatment for undisclosed reasons. He is currently under heavy police guard as investigations continue.
Investigators revealed that Kamukama operated a traditional shrine at the residence, and that Shallona was Kyomugisha’s daughter from a previous relationship. Forensic teams at the scene recovered a white bucket containing reddish water, suspected to have been used to clean up blood after the assault. Authorities are awaiting the suspect’s full recovery to conduct formal interrogations and uncover the exact motive behind the tragedy.
