As the countdown to 2030 continues, health officials and development partners are offering a cautious assessment of Uganda’s national response to the HIV/Aids epidemic. While the country has made remarkable strides in expanding treatment coverage and achieving high rates of viral suppression, significant obstacles still threaten the ambitious goal of eradicating the disease as a public health threat within the next few years.
According to stakeholders, including the Uganda Aids Commission (UAC), the Ministry of Health, and UNAIDS, the national response presents a complex picture. On one hand, Uganda’s multi-sectoral strategy has long been celebrated as a regional and global success story, prompting several other nations to replicate its implementation framework.
However, these notable achievements in keeping people alive and healthy are continually undermined by unacceptably high rates of new HIV infections and lingering Aids-related deaths. Mr. Tom Etii, the acting Director General of the UAC, acknowledges both the triumphs and the fragility of the current progress, emphasizing that sustaining the momentum requires urgent, decisive intervention.
Experts note that addressing the remaining drivers of new transmissions, combatting persistent social stigma, and navigating dwindling international donor support are critical if Uganda is to safeguard its past victories. Without strategic adjustments and reinforced domestic resource mobilization, the delicate journey toward the 2030 target remains precariously balanced.
