Entrepreneurs in Uganda can now register companies, file annual returns, and check trademarks directly from their smartphones following the launch of the URSB Connect App. Unveiled by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, the new mobile tool seeks to end the long queues and repeated physical visits that have traditionally frustrated business owners interacting with the bureau’s offices.
Speaking at the launch, Acting Registrar General Mr. Mustapher Ntale emphasised that the application highlights the bureau’s dedication to innovation and accessible service delivery. The app serves as a central digital hub for various URSB mandates, encompassing business name registration, searches, intellectual property services, insolvency records, and the Security Interest in Movable Property Registry System.
Formal business registration is a crucial gateway for entrepreneurs seeking corporate bank accounts, government tenders, tax registration, and legal protection for their brands. Previously, entrepreneurs outside Kampala faced steep transport costs and logistical hurdles to access these services. While URSB has steadily transitioned away from paper-based systems through platforms like the eRegistry, the new app extends these digital services directly to mobile devices.
Despite the promising convenience, stakeholders note that the app’s ultimate success will depend on overcoming common public sector digital hurdles, such as network downtime, complex user interfaces, and backend support limitations. Ensuring reliable performance and user-friendly navigation will be vital to encouraging Uganda’s vast informal business sector to formalise, unlock commercial credit, and scale operations. Available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the URSB Connect App marks a significant milestone in shaping Uganda’s digital business ecosystem.
