Tesla appears ready to halt the production of its polarizing Cybertruck at its Texas factory next year, according to remarks made by chief executive Elon Musk. While Musk did not explicitly clarify whether manufacturing would cease completely or simply move to another location, he indicated the shift is necessary to “make room” for the production of the company’s autonomous Cybercab.

Further fueling speculation that the vehicle is being discontinued, lead engineer Wes Morrill posted on X that the Cybertruck served as an incredible technology platform and will live on through the Cybercab. When a disappointed supporter lamented online that the vehicle was being discontinued next year, Musk replied with the word “true,” though he reassured followers that the existing fleet will remain on roads for a long time.

First unveiled in 2019 with a memorable demonstration where its supposedly unbreakable windows shattered, the stainless-steel vehicle has always been a personal passion project for Musk. Despite its futuristic aesthetic that drew comparisons to sci-fi films, the rollout was plagued by lengthy delays until its official market launch in 2023. Disappointing sales figures, high price tags—reaching upwards of $100,000 for elite models—and multiple recalls ultimately weighed heavily on the vehicle’s commercial viability.
