Authorities have detained the chief engineer of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Mr. Herbert Ngobi, alongside 10 other staff members, following a major investigation into the vandalism of critical electrical and security installations at Entebbe International Airport.
The arrests come as the government counts losses estimated at Shs3.7 billion due to the destruction and theft of vital equipment. Officials indicate that repairing the damaged installations will require a total of Shs23 billion, though only Shs6 billion has been secured so far.
The crackdown was initiated after Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama inspected the vandalized facilities. According to the minister, the operation was sanctioned directly by President Museveni following alarming reports of persistent security breaches and internal sabotage at the nation’s primary gateway.
Investigations into the incident continue as authorities look to address governance and security vulnerabilities at the airport.
