The High Court Family Division is stepping up efforts to tackle case backlogs and preserve family ties through a dedicated two-week mediation exercise. Running from November 2 to 13, the initiative has selected 500 pending cases with a firm target of securing at least 100 successful settlements.
Operating under the theme “Give Mediation a Chance,” the campaign aims to steer litigants away from protracted litigation. Speaking on Salam TV’s Judiciary programme, Deputy Registrar of the Family Division, HW Komugisa Juliet, emphasized that family disputes involve deeply personal matters that extend far beyond routine property and court files.
According to Juliet, unresolved conflicts often take a heavy toll on children and the overall wellbeing of relatives. Mediation provides a constructive environment where disputing parties can meet with a neutral mediator to negotiate mutually acceptable outcomes. The process is designed to save time, lower the financial burdens of prolonged court battles, and foster genuine reconciliation.
The 500 cases earmarked for this initiative encompass divorce matters, administration causes involving caveats, and various other domestic conflicts. Fifteen court-accredited mediators, which include retired justices and judges, have been assigned to facilitate the sessions throughout the fortnight.
Registrar Juliet encouraged the public to embrace dialogue, noting that even individuals whose previous mediation attempts failed should consider giving the process another chance. The special fortnight highlights the Judiciary’s wider strategy to promote alternative dispute resolution across Uganda.
