A Kenyan court has sentenced doomsday cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the murder of 191 people, nearly all of whom were children. Mackenzie and 27 co-accused individuals were found guilty of instructing followers to starve themselves and their children to death so they could “meet Jesus” in what has become one of the nation’s worst episodes of religious extremism.
Justice Diana Mochache stated that Mackenzie bore primary criminal culpability for directing the fatal fasts. Prosecutors in Mombasa had pushed for the death penalty due to the severity of the crimes and a lack of remorse from the accused, though capital punishment has not been applied in Kenya since 1987.
The self-styled pastor was arrested in 2023 after authorities discovered more than 400 bodies in shallow graves across the remote Shakahola forest near the Kenyan coast. Post-mortem examinations revealed that while starvation caused most deaths, some victims suffered from suffocation, strangulation, or head injuries.
Before their convictions, Mackenzie and his co-accused maintained their innocence and claimed no one was forced to die. However, evidence and witness testimonies detailed an organized system of coercion, where dissenters were beaten to death and forest burials were bizarrely celebrated as weddings with Jesus.
The tragedy has drawn intense scrutiny regarding the oversight of rogue religious groups and local law enforcement responses. Investigations previously highlighted missed opportunities by authorities to intervene earlier. While these convictions mark a significant legal milestone, Mackenzie and his associates still face additional charges involving terrorism, radicalization, and child rights violations.
