Panic has gripped Soroti University following the sighting of three leopards roaming the campus premises around the administration block. Security cameras captured the dangerous animals moving through the grounds overnight, forcing students and staff to lock themselves inside their hostels for safety.
A campus security guard reported that personnel immediately retreated indoors when the wild cats were spotted and escalated distress calls to university management. Urgent safety alerts were circulated on WhatsApp groups, advising everyone to remain inside until professional wildlife handlers could intervene.
Students have expressed extreme terror, noting that the same animals are believed to be responsible for killing a man who was hunting birds in Gweri Sub-County just days prior. Harriet Aguti, a student at the institution, stated that she refuses to return to classes until wildlife authorities capture the beasts and guarantee campus safety.
Juma Hassan Nyene, the Soroti University Public Relations Officer, confirmed that a team from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) responded swiftly to management’s distress calls and is currently on the ground tracking the leopards.
According to Stephen Omoding, the assistant Resident City Commissioner for Soroti City, these predators have been wandering around the district for nearly three months. Authorities believe the leopards strayed from Kidepo National Park alongside buffaloes that have been moving through the sub-region in search of water. Security officials have urged UWA to expedite the capture operation to alleviate widespread anxiety across the district.
