Somalia’s political crisis has deepened after the Supreme Court ruled that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud unlawfully extended his time in office. The ruling declares that constitutional changes approved by parliament in March, which added a year to the president’s mandate, cannot be applied retrospectively to his current term.

The judicial confrontation escalated rapidly after President Mohamud dismissed Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf Ahmed. The Supreme Court swiftly declared the dismissal null and void, asserting that the executive lacked the authority to remove the chief justice outside established constitutional procedures and accusing the presidency of interfering with judicial independence.

Adding pressure to the executive, the court ordered political leaders to agree on a new electoral plan within 30 days and hold elections within 90 days. This directive threatens to upend the government’s current roadmap, which had scheduled parliamentary votes for April 2027 and a presidential election the following month. Opposition groups and regional administrations had already rejected that timetable, accusing the administration of using reforms to prolong its rule.

The standoff has drawn sharp rebukes from political heavyweights, including former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, who condemned an alleged deployment of security forces to the court premises as a dangerous assault on the rule of law. Meanwhile, President Mohamud insists the reforms are necessary to transition the nation away from its traditional clan-based system toward fully democratic elections.

The turmoil comes at a precarious time for the Horn of Africa nation, which continues to battle al-Shabab militants across rural territories. Security concerns have been further heightened by announcements from troop-contributing nations like Uganda regarding upcoming peacekeeper drawdowns. Read the full details in the Nile Post report.
