A panel of three judges at the High Court in Dar es Salaam has sentenced Tanzania’s main opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, to four years in prison. The court found him guilty of inciting unrest after ruling that his campaign slogan, “No Reforms, No Election,” encouraged the public to disrupt the disputed 2025 general election. However, the 58-year-old politician was acquitted of the more serious charge of treason, with the judges noting that prosecutors failed to prove the essential elements required for that offense.

Lissu, who leads the opposition Chadema party and represented himself during the trial, firmly denied the charges and accused the judiciary of acting on political directives. He argued that the incitement charge was manufactured and maintained that his remarks were part of a legitimate political campaign advocating for critical electoral and constitutional reforms. Despite his conviction, Lissu stated his intention to apply for bail and pursue an appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The case stems from his arrest in April last year, six months before the October 2025 general election, which saw President Samia Suluhu Hassan win with 98% of the vote following an exclusion of her main challengers. Human rights groups and opposition parties have heavily criticized the trial, raising fresh concerns about political freedom and the shrinking space for dissent in East Africa. Further details of the ruling and ongoing regional reactions are available in the source report on Nile Post.
