Police in the West Nile region have opened an investigation into a violent confrontation in Arua City that left two suspected armed robbers dead. The incident occurred on a Thursday afternoon in Kawua cell, Etori ward, situated near the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to regional police spokesperson SSP Josephine Angucia, the episode began when an unidentified Congolese national traveled by motorcycle from Arua City center toward the DRC after completing a gold transaction. Two armed men on a separate motorcycle allegedly stalked the trader along the route.

As the group reached Kawua cell, the attackers opened fire, wounding the boda boda rider in the leg. Despite his injury, the determined rider pressed onward across the border into Congolese territory while calling out for assistance.

Alerted by the gunfire, local residents rushed to the scene and confronted the armed suspects. Overwhelmed by the crowd, the two alleged robbers were beaten to death and their bodies, along with their motorcycle, were set on fire. The local community successfully recovered an AK-47 rifle during the altercation.

Following notification from the local intelligence officer, a team of detectives visited the scene. Authorities documented the area and recovered the rusted firearm loaded with 17 rounds of live ammunition, alongside a single cartridge and the wreckage of the burnt motorcycle.

The remains of the deceased suspects were transported to the Arua Regional Referral Hospital mortuary to undergo post-mortem examinations and help facilitate formal identification. While law enforcement praised the community for their bravery in neutralizing the armed threat and securing the weapon, authorities strongly cautioned the public against resorting to unlawful vigilante justice.
