President Yoweri Museveni is reportedly exercising caution regarding the legal situation of retired Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu. According to cultural leaders from the Teso sub-region, the president is hesitant to secure the former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces’ release outside established judicial procedures due to fears that such an intervention could trigger a wrongful arrest and detention lawsuit against the government.
This development came to light following a closed-door meeting at State House Entebbe. The discussions included the Emorimor of Iteso, Papa Paul Sande Emolot, and the Won Ateker of Kumam, Papa Raphael Otaya. During the engagement, the cultural heads and the president addressed the ongoing detention of Gen. Elwelu alongside other key matters affecting the region.
Sources indicated that the talks also touched upon broader regional security concerns, educational requirements for local communities, and ongoing government development programs in the Teso sub-region. However, the fate of Gen. Elwelu remained a central point of discussion, with the president emphasizing that the allegations surrounding the senior retired military officer are serious and cannot be easily dismissed or bypassed through informal channels.
Legal experts and observers note that high-profile military detentions require careful navigation under Ugandan law to balance institutional accountability with individual rights. As the situation unfolds, regional leaders continue to engage with the central government to find a lawful resolution to the matter.
