Updated: Attempted coup against President Pierre Nkurunzinza fails, three of the coup leaders arrested while the former intelligence chief who was also the key figure ais on the run. The deputy leader of the coup, General Cyrille Ndayirukiye told the AFP news agency that; "Personally I recognise that our movement has failed."
All is not well in neighboring Burundi as there seems to be an attempted coup.
Apparently, President Pierre Nkurunziza was in Tanzania for the EAC summit busy discussing the crisis only to learn that former Intelligence Chief, Major General Godefroid Niyombare had ordered the closure of all the borders and airport asking all concerned to respect the order.
He left the summit to try and fly back to Bujumbura to address the nation, but mid way, his plane was forced to return to TZ on learning that the airport had been closed anyway and all international flights into and out of Burundi were cancelled.
The unrest that started on Apr 26 has claimed 20 people so far. General Niyombare does not recognize the leadership because the President’s bid for a third term violated the constitution.
Statement by President Nkurunziza
"It is with regret that we have learned that a group from the armed forces mutinied this morning and declared an imaginary coup.
"This coup attempt has been foiled and that these people, who read the coup announcement on the radio, are being hunted by defence and security forces so that they can be brought to justice."
