Uga Chick Poultry breeders dragged Uchumi to the Commercial court for failing to pay Shs185M for poultry products supplied between March and July this year. Bailiffs were seen raiding the main branch on Yusuf Lule road grabbing whatever could help them in recovering the monies owed. A few weeks back, Uchumi Kabalagala branch was forced to close following a shs 70m power debt to UMEME, staff who were still demanding for last month salary were sent on forced leave as they waited for a final decision from the head office in Nairobi. Last year, the Kenyan departmental store had to close it's Freedom City Mall branch citing poor location as the reason for the low sales, the premises are now occupied by OUTLET supermarket. Capital Shoppers has equally not made it any easier for Uchumi, they opened up a branch at the Garden City Mall basement taking over most customers who had parked at the basement who had no reason of going to the first floor for basic items. Short of that, business has been slow for other tenants as a result of the many malls that are opening up in the city like the Oasis Mall, Village Mall in Bugolobi, Ham Towers in Makerere, Quality Village in Namugongo among others.
