KCCA closes Shoprite Lugogo meat section
Following a tip off from a customer, Kampala Capital City Authority's public health team swung into action and found that the supermarket's cold room was not following the proper meat hygiene standards and codes.
The team found stale meat that was not ideal for human consumption on top of improper meat waste disposal practices. It was also discovered that the Lugogo based supermarket was not following the meat hygiene codes and standards.
It turned out that the poor waste water drainage in the meat section was the major source of contamination.
"Meat processing at Shoprite Lugogo will remain suspended until the Super Market adheres fully to the required codes and Standards of practice," A source at the KCCA noted.
It's the third time in a span of two years when the supermarket is caught up in similar circumstances.
KCCA has warned that the operation is ongoing..
