A section of Kampala road was sealed off this morning as the police tried to assess the rapid responsiveness of the bomb squad in case the situation warranted. Police dogs and the team from the bomb squad were used. The Governor Bank of Uganda ordered all staff to go home until further notice.
This was a trial exercise though staff were not told the truth to the extent that some went home and never returned for work. No wonder the public was equally confused now that the road had been blocked, sniffer dogs were all over and the police who were on the sight were equally tough. The objective of the exercise was realised.
One staff member who was still in the vicinity said: "There was fire at about 10:00am from the basement, so the emergency siren went off prompting all staff to run for safety". They left valuables like hand bags which had keys to their houses and were wondering how to open their homes when they get back.
Traffic was diverted to down town Kampala causing a bumper to bumper situation on all the neighbouring routes. Pedestrians were equally stopped from using the pavement around Bank of Uganda as the fire brigade team, ambulances and other
